Laughter Yoga, a “wellbeing workout” designed by Dr. Madan Kataria, has gained popularity throughout the world for its purported benefits to heal both physical and mental ailments. Practitioners describe the practice as a life-changing process that has freed them from depression, spiritual listlessness, and chronic pain. Highly regarded doctor of integrative medicine Andrew Weil has even stated that Laughter Yoga can be a “powerful intervention” against illness and could help lower health-care costs in America.

What is Laughter Yoga?   A concept first created in 1995 by Madan Kataria, a physician from India, Laughter Yoga has been gaining in popularity in recent years. According to a recent New Yorker article, estimates of the number of people who regularly engage in Laughter Yoga are as high as 250,000, but it is nearly impossible to obtain precise figures. Dr. Kataria estimates that there are 6,000 Laughter Clubs in India alone.   Laughter Yoga is not a physical practice in the way that most people think of yoga in the Western world. There is no stretching or physical exertion involved.
